Efficiency and intelligence for transport chains

Over recent years, globalization and the introduction of new technologies have accelerated the structural change of the manufacturing processes, but in many cases more energy is used in logistics than in manufacturing.

Finland is located on the periphery of Europe and transport distances within the country are long. Logistics costs, therefore, amount typically to more than 10 percent of businesses' turnover.

To avoid the location-related disadvantages, Finland has developed logistics systems as a part of international networks and created a smooth and well-organized logistics, which is very important for business life, and particularly for competitiveness of exports.

As an example of the latest developments are Finnish energy auditing tools focusing on transportation chains to seek ways to still improve efficiency and save on transport costs and reduce emissions. Audits typically find ways to cut energy use by 10-20 percent and total transportation up to seven percent.

Today, Finland also focuses on intelligent transport systems and services (ITS) in terms of applications in use as well as enterprises involved in design and supply of these solutions.

The partners in the ITS Finland network will prepare, start up and implement projects in cooperation as well as create services and profitable business and exports based on knowledge in real-time traffic and travel information.
